Medium Bodied coffee in London

A speciality coffee flavour note across London.

Medium body in coffee refers to a weight and texture in the cup that sits comfortably between light, tea-like thinness and the dense, syrupy richness of a full-bodied brew. A drinker can expect a smooth, rounded mouthfeel with enough substance to feel satisfying without coating the palate heavily. This quality typically results from moderate levels of dissolved solids and oils, influenced by factors such as bean density, roast development into the light-to-medium range, and processing methods that preserve a balanced concentration of sugars and proteins.

How medium bodied notes develop

Coffees from Central American origins such as Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador often produce medium-bodied cups, as do many offerings from Colombia and certain East African regions when roasted with restraint. Washed processing methods typically yield cleaner, more defined medium body by removing the fruit pulp before drying, which tends to reduce the heavier, more complex textures associated with natural or honey-processed lots. Honey-processed coffees from Costa Rica and Brazil, however, can also sit in the medium-body range, offering a gentle sweetness alongside that balanced weight.

What to look for

On a bag or cafe menu, terms such as "balanced", "smooth", "clean", or "rounded" often signal a medium-bodied coffee, as do flavour notes like milk chocolate, caramel, red apple, or stone fruit without heavy emphasis on richness or intensity. Pour-over methods such as the V60 or Chemex tend to highlight medium body clearly, allowing the texture to register without amplification from immersion or pressure. Filter drip and AeroPress with a longer, cooler brew can also express this quality well, making the body easy to assess alongside the coffee's other characteristics.
