Coffee origin

Uganda coffee in London

9 speciality roasts from 8 London roasters use Uganda beans.

Uganda produces speciality coffee that tends toward full body and relatively low acidity, with flavour profiles that often include dark fruit, cocoa, earthy notes and occasional hints of vanilla or spice. Robusta grown in Uganda can reach a quality level unusual for the species, and washed Arabica from higher elevations frequently shows cleaner, brighter characteristics with stone fruit and mild citrus qualities. The principal growing regions include Mount Elgon in the east, the Rwenzori Mountains along the western border, and areas around Mount Muhabura in the south-west, with Arabica typically cultivated at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,200 metres.

The most common Arabica varietal encountered is SL14, alongside SL28 and various local Bugisu selections on Mount Elgon. Washed processing is the most widely used method for Arabica, though natural processing is present and produces noticeably heavier, fruitier cups. Uganda's high-quality Robusta is sometimes used as a base component in espresso blends, valued for its body and lower cost relative to comparable Arabica origins.
